At the gates of Brittany, open on the sleeve, Saint Malo is the main port city on the coast of northern Brittany. This city, fortified over the ages, was originally built on an island with a rocky base. A tidal wave, around the 8th century, would have attached it to the mainland, transforming the island into a peninsula.
The best way to discover the city is certainly walking! Do you prefer an atypical and tailor-made visit? Some companies, such as “ sea horses“, offer carriage rides in the surrounding area.
Spanning only a few square kilometers, Saint-Malo is full of historical remains. Discover the ramparts which overlook the city, offering a view of the ships at the docks. A walk on the ramparts is the best way to soak up the discreet tumult of intramural life. Although retaining a medieval appearance, these ramparts were in fact mostly built after the Second World War!
Saint-Malo would not be what it is without its impressive tides. At low tide, the sandy beaches reveal their full extent and provide access to Fort National as well as Fort du Petit Bé. At high tide, the waves hit the ramparts with a spectacular crash, offering the famous postcard photos.
Want to continue your path of discovery on the coast? Mont Saint-Michel is less than an hour away!
Do you have your sea legs and want to discover the city from the water? Embark aboard old vintage rigs for an unforgettable ride. The support is complete, no prerequisites are necessary. Outings at sunset, for an afternoon or for the whole day. The ideal gift for a couple or small group on vacation in Saint-Malo.
