This hotel, built at the beginning of the 17th century, is the oldest building in the city center of Saint-Malo
Rue des Cordiers has preserved a number of old buildings, including our Hôtel at no. 2, which is now the oldest dated house in the town (1600), and at nos. 4, 6 (17th century) and 8 (1781).
This street, where our hotel, was famous for its artisan rope makers, essential to the thriving maritime activity near the port. Until 1701, around ten of these artisans still practiced their trade there, in a street which was also known under the name of rue des Porches.
Our hotel is surrounded by history. Before the construction of the curtain wall of Chartres during the expansion of the city between 1721 and 1723, the street ran along the old city wall of Saint Malo. This period left remarkable architectural traces, as evidenced by the old buildings at numbers 2, 4, 6 and 8 of the street.
L'Elizabeth Hotel is located near the wheat market, an emblematic building begun in 1822 and expanded in 1892 under the direction of the architect Auguste Bénard. The pediments of the market are proudly adorned with the city's coat of arms, recalling the glorious past of Saint Malo.
Next to our hotel once stood the Hôtel de l'Abbaye Saint-Jean, a historic site founded in the 13th century. This abbey was not only a center of charity and mutual aid, but also a place of power, having served as a town hall, a consulate, and even a navigation classroom.
We invite you to breakfast in the basement of this centuries-old building, under vaulted ceilings from the time of the "Gentlemen of Saint-Malo". We offer a buffet breakfast in an authentic wooden room.
